"Extract of a letter from Calcutta March 26"
"The painful task has fallen on me to inform you of the loss of the ship Paragon (from England the 31st of Aug and the Cape the 6th of Dec) on Sangor Sand.
The melancholy event happened on the night of the 25th, the whole of the passengers and crew with the exception of a Portugese lascar who refused to quit the wreck were saved by the Sophia, pilot vessel
The officers and volunteers on board the Sophia, much to their credit, volunteered their services to go in the boat to assist in saving the passengers and crew.
They brought the ladies, seven in number and Capt KEENE who has been dangerously ill for some time, safely to shore.
PS the vessel has sunk: and not an article of property saved, the Captain is since dead"
