Steam versus wind Liverpool Mercury November 1838

 

The packet-ship George Washington, Capt Henry HOLDREGE, which sailed from New York on the 9th instant, five days after the Great Western steam-ship passed Holyhead at noon, on Friday last, after a fine run of 17 days from the city, and had there been light and water, would have entered the Mersey on the evening of that day; as it was she did not enter it until Saturday afternoon. Now the George Washington made the passage in 18 and the Great Western in 12 and a half days; and striking off a day for the ship’s run from the longitude of Bristol, the advantage in favour of the steamer, is, as the case of the Columbus nearly five days
