Crane Accident Brunswick Dock Liverpool 1st August 1903
A shocking accident occurred yesterday at Brunswick Dock Liverpool by which four men lost their lives. A new dock entrance is being constructed and several large travelling cranes are used on the sea wall for the conveyance of material. One was under repair and while five men were working the crane suddenly toppled over and fell into the river carrying the men with it It was close on high tide at the time and the crane fell some fifteen feet into the river carrying the men with it. One of the five men got ashore Joseph RYLEY, but the others drowned. The names of the deceased men are Joseph SYKES, aged 22 engine driver, Patrick McLOUGHLIN aged twenty three, labourer. William COOK engine driver and William COULDREY Millwright. Soon after the accident a diver was sent down but he could do nothing and for some time after the accident no bodies had been recovered.
