On the morning of 21ST April 1890 The SS BRANKELOW sank off the coast of Cornwall at Gunwallowe Bay. The Captain of the vessel at that time was David STEWART. Jut before sailing from Cardiff a close friend and collleague William SIMPSON died suddenly at the Imperial Hotel Cardiff. David Stewart registered his friends death then put to sea in Cardiff. A board of trade enquiry was held. It was stated that the ship's compasses had been tampered with, but David STEWART was held responsible together with the first and sceond mate. It was said that some of the crew were drunk and the Captain was below at the time of the accident
