Lancaster Assizes Liverpool Mercury August 28 1818

 

Sentences Saturday August 22

 

The business of the Crown Court finished about two o’clock this afternoon, when Baron WOOD passed sentences on the prisoners capitally convicted; all the other prisoners, except Henry HACKING, for bigamy who was sentenced to six months imprisonment, having received the judgement of the Court at the conclusion of their respective trials. His Lordship did not positively exclude from the hope of mercy any of the prisoners- the following is a summary of the proceedings in the Crown Court:-

 

Capitally convicted and received sentence of death.

Charles MAWDSLEY for rape; Wm FITZPATRICK and Daniel FITZPATRICK, for highway robbery; Richard WRIGHT, Thos. BRADLEY, Barney McCLOUGHLIN, John HENSHAW, Wm CEARNES, Robert REDMAN, Jonathan CRABTREE, Thos. GLEAVES, and Thos. BROOKES for burglary; James SPROUT and Thomas DAWSON for horse-stealing, Joseph WILKINSON for sheep-stealing; Wm RATCHFORD, Christopher THOMPSON, John BURROWS and William STANLEY, for stealing in the dwelling house to the value of 40s.

 

Transported 14 years – Henry GREENWOOD and John HAWORTH, for croft-breaking; Jaes McANULTY, James WADDLE and Letitia WADDLE for having forged Bank of England notes in their possession

 

Transported 7 years – Pter JONES, William ROBINSON and Wm. PALFREY-SMITH for simple larceny

 

Imprisoned 8 months Richard PENRYN, for manslaughter

 

Imprisoned 6 months Mary YATES and Mary BODIN for concealing the births of tgheir illegitimate children; and Henry HACKING for bigamy

 

Imprisoned 2 months- Thomas SHAW, for manslaughter

 

Imprisoned 1 month Robert JOHNSON, for manslaughter

 

Prisoners Acquitted on trial – Cuthbert WRIGHT, Chas. ROWLANDS, Michael POYNTON, Joseph WILKINSON, Patrick MURPHY, Stephen HARGREAVES, Joseph WRIGHT, Joseph DOYLE, Thomas ADAMSON, William HEAP, and James BUTLER

 

No Bills against John WILSON, Martha BRACEWELL and John WIGNALL
