On Saturday the 27th ult. T TOOLE (aged 34) John DAVIES (20) AND Wm O’BRYAN alias Thomas DWYER (32) were convicted of robbing Robert CHAMBERS on the King’s Highway at Everton – these were part of the desperate gang which infested the town and neighbourhood of Liverpool last winter; and TOOLE and DWYER were apprehended after a sharp conflict, by the constables decoying them, with three others, in a coach, which they attacked, not expecting so warm a reception- NEWTON, who was admitting King’s evidence, and DAVIES were taken soon afterwards; but Michael CLANCIE, the other of the gang has hitherto evaded justice.

 

On Monday James ROGERS (34) and Timothy O’BRIEN (18) were convicted of robbig T.O.COOPER on the King’s Highway at West Derby- T HICKSON was admitted Kings evidence. John BOSCOW (28) for coining three penny pieces, was found guilty – John AINSWORTH (46) was convicted of putting off counterfeit silver, fined 1s, and to be imprisoned for one year.

 

On Tuesday, Thomas NAYLOR (30) was convicted of stealing twelve barres and two half hogheads belonging to H M S Princess, the property of the King; and received sentence of Death but hope of mercy was held out to him- Esther LATHAM (22) was found guilty of stealing to the amount of 39s in a house in West Leigh – Thos WABURTON for burglary, and Thomas CAWKWELL, for manslaughter, were both aquitted – Thos LISTER (a comb maker) for being about to leave this Kingom for America to find sureties, himself is £20, and two in £10 each

 

Same day WM. Martin LOLLEY (30) found guilty of bigamy at last Assizes (but judgement respited till the opinions of the twelve judges were taken, which were in favour of the verdict) was sentenced to seven years transportation

 

On Wenesday John BARNETT (22) found guilty of stealing to the amount of 39s in a house in Ribchester; and William GRANGE (50) for stealing lead in Toxteth Park; were each sentenced to be transported for seven years – John PARKINSON (17) convicted of manslaughter, was fined 1s and discharged – George ROBINSON (19) was convicted of stealing a filly at Thornam, and recommended to mercy – Robert FOXTED was acquitted of murder of J BLEKELY at Manchester

 

On Thursday William HAIGH (21) and John HAIGH (29) were found guilty of a burglary in the house of W WHITWORTH, at Spotland, Emund BAMFORD and Robert HOLT  for highway robbery, at Rochdale were all aquitted

 

Same day before the Hon. Justice Le Blanc Thomas SIMPKIN (38) and Patrick McDERMOT (35) were convicted of a burglary at Lathom, and with John DUNKLEY  (21)  convicted of sheep stealing  at Blackburn, received sentence of death – Hopes of mercy were held out to DUNKLEY. Elizabeth HARRISON (20) was found guilty of stealing bank notes from W ROWLANDS at Liverpool  and sentenced to seven years transportation. Ellen HUGHES and Elizabeth McCRACKEN charged with the same offence were aquitted. James TROTELL (looks like) (36) found guilty of grand larceny  at Samlesbury, was fined 1s and to be imprisoned for twelve months in the House of Correction. Sarah RUBY (37) convicted of stealing in a shop in Wigan was sentenced to twelve months hard labour at the House of Correction Jos. BROWN pleaded guilty to a charge of having uttered base sixpences at Hawkshead, and was sentenced to six months imprisonment and afterwards to find sureties

 

On Friday before the Hon Baron Thompson, Cicely COLLIER (52) was tried for the murder of her husband John COLLIER, at Barton-upon-Irwell by poisoning him; but the body having been interred seven weeks before it was taken up and dissected by a surgeon, the latter could not swear to his having died by poison, although the stomach had appearances which indicated that poison had been taken; she was aquitted.

 

He whole of the prisoners having been tried, the Ho Baron Thompson proceeded to discharge a number of insolvent debtors. The court was adjourned till Saturday morning at nine-oclock, when sentence will be passed upon those prisoners who have not been sentenced on the days of their trials. We are sorry to observe that no less than twenty-one prisoners have been capitally convicted at these Assizes
